The Criminal Justice System Is Fair And True - 1260 Words

Most people in America believe that our criminal justice system is fair and true. The idea that any free citizen could be unjustly sentenced to prison or executed by the state is thought of as false. Unfortunately now a days the judicial process has been infiltrated with false confessions, eyewitness misidentification, improper forensic science, perjury, ineffective defense counsels, messy police investigations and prosecutorial misconduct. Our criminal justice system is based on the concept that every wrong has a cause and effect, thus forcing us to punish any and all offenders, but with all the faults in our system how do we know who’s guilty of committing the crime? Most of the time this is when wrongful convictions occurs. A simple definition of wrongful conviction is when innocent defendants are found guilty in criminal trials. Frequently these innocent defendants are forced to go as far as to plead guilty to avoid death penalties or long prison sentences. â€Å"The Num ber of wrongly convicted persons cannot be known with certainty, because no federal or state agency keeps track of exonerations, let alone wrongful convictions. Many news stories, reports and books fairly describe wrongful convictions in detail, although not all of these wrongful convictions resulted in formal exonerations. In some of these cases, prosecutors insisted that the original verdict was accurate despite strong new evidence of factual innocence, further clouding an understanding of wrongfulShow MoreRelatedCriminal Justice System The Criminal Justice System is made up of several different process law900 Words   |  4 PagesCriminal Justice System The Criminal Justice System is made up of several different process law enforcement, judiciary, and corrections this system is where the accused individual are tried and punished for the crime they are charged with. Evaluation of Cathay Pacific Free Essays

Evaluation: Employee In our case, the Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants Union (FAU) did not satisfy with a new policy that required them to work at least 70 hours a month before they could swap shifts with colleagues and they thought this new policy had hurt their pay and lifestyle. Pay and benefits is one of the factors that affect job satisfaction of the employees and it is perhaps one of the most rewards employees would like to get in order to support their lives. So when the flight attendants union alerted that their usual benefits gain from the job has changed, they immediately voiced their concern and bargained with the employer to protect their rights. We will write a custom essay sample on Evaluation of Cathay Pacific or any similar topic only for you Order Now Moreover, the flight attendants viewed the new decision as the company’s measure to withdraw their benefits that they are entitled to receive, which are claimed to be clearly stated in the labor contract with Cathay Pacific. They argued to the employer that this action was illegal as the company did not communicate this decision with them beforehand. This can be explained by the principles of justice of the employees which consists of outcome fairness, procedural justice and interactional justice. In our case, interactional justice can be applied. A perception of interactional justice is a judgment that the organization carried out its actions in a way that took the employee’s feelings into account. It includes the explanation of decision to the employees, respectful treatment, consideration and empathy. Referring to our case, the employer did not notice the employees before the implementation of the new policy which made the employees think the company did not concern their opinion. As their feelings are being ignored by the employer, the flight attendants union strongly opposed this new policy and caused conflict with the employer. Through this case, we discover that conflicts cannot be avoided in the workplace since the management goals and labor union goals are always opposite. The management aims to lower costs and raise outputs, as in our case, Cathay Pacific wanted to increase the productivity of the flight attendants and ensured every one of them should work at least 70 hours a month before they could swap shifts with colleagues. However, the labor union aims at obtaining pay and working conditions that satisfy their members and of giving members a voice in decisions that affect them, and in our case, the flight attendants bargained with the employer not to accept the new policy which harm their benefits. As some degree of conflict is inevitable between workers and management, the labor union has a significant role to represent their members’ interests and resolving conflicts with employers. When more employees join the labor union, it can boost the bargaining power of the union as it represents more employees. The Cathay Pacific Flight Attendants Union represents over 5,800 cabin crew in Cathay Pacific Airways which is a high ratio. Collective bargaining is indeed one of the ways to manage conflicts. It can be defined as a voluntary, formalized process by which employers and independent trade unions negotiate, for specified groups of employee, terms and conditions of employment. Regarding our case, the union would like to negotiate with the management at first but received no response so the union threatened to take industrial action, including a work-to-rule or a potential strike to urge the reply of the management. The pressure of an impending strike deadline forces both union and management negotiators to make concession and resolve their differences. Threatening of going on strike is usually a weapon of the labor union because it will cause a big harm to the employer and that the union can gain more attention from the management and gain a higher chance to win the negotiation. Fortunately with the intervention of the Labor Department the dispute was brought to an end with an agreement signed to withdraw the swap restriction permanently. The Biggest Winner was the union, which gained more than 600 new Members as a result of the ordeal. Through this case, it is obvious that the labor union gain a high importance in representing the employees and bargaining with the employer in order to get their desired results. http://www. aspireaviation. com/2010/04/05/cathay-pacific-threatened-with-strike/ http://www. thestandard. com. hk/news_detail. asp? pp_cat=11art_id=96074sid=27482954con_type=1 http://www. businesstraveller. asia/asia-pacific/news/cathay-pacific-cabin-crew-mull-strike http://www. cpafau. org. hk/eng/index/ How to cite Evaluation of Cathay Pacific, Essay examples

The Mona Lisa World

The Mona Lisa World-Famous Painting Essay Leonardo da Vincis Mona Lisa is the most famous painting in the world. It was started on 1503 and completed on 1517. It is the greatest painting of the renaissance times. Right now is sitting behind bullet-proof glass at the MusAÂ ©e du Louvre in Paris, France. The small portrait attracts around six million visitors per year. Why is it that this is the most famous painting of the renaissance? Have you ever got something stolen or lost and then really wanted that thing back? Well thats what happen to this famous painting of Mona Lisa. The Mona Lisa was stolen from the Salon Carre in the Louvre. In August 1911, an Italian employee at the museum named Vincenzo Peruggia took the painting off the wall and walked out. His plan was to return the Mona Lisa to Italy where it belonged, but the police caught him after two years, and the painting was recovered and returned to France on December 30, 1913. Like I was saying something was lost and then you found it, the thing becomes valuable so did the painting. Since the Mona Lisa was stolen it attracted more people, eventually it became even more famous. When I found the painting of Mona Lisa was stolen. I was shocked because how could you let something valuable get stolen. So later when I found out about how and who stole it, I thought it was an inside job because the museum wanted to have it stolen so they could attract more attention. The reason I thought of that was because there is no way you could hide a painting and walk out of a building with tight security. I am not sure a hundred percent if it was an inside job or not. I sure do know it got a lot of attention when it was stolen which then later when it was found people that gave attention to it. People also visit Museum du Louvre museum just to Mona Lisa because it was made by Leonardo Da Vinci. Leonardo was one of the best people from the renaissance times, because he had achieved the renaissance goal of doing many things and exceeding in all. Since hes a good artist so people go see it just think of it like this, see we always buy stuff from companies that are famous and good like Apple. We buy our phones from apple because we think there good which makes it even more famous and thats how paintings are we see them and they get famous. It also gives people ideas what the artists though like and what tools they had to use before. Replicas of Mona Lisa have also made it famous. There are replicas that look just like it and that are a funny version of it. This promotes the real Mona Lisa because people try to understand where the body came from if it is a funny version where the real version it might inspire to learn about it because the smile on the face of Mona Lisa is mysterious, and some want to find out why shes smiling. It promotes the renaissance also because some people want to learn about when it was made and what was around that time. So replicas and other copies of Mona Lisa are really helping to promote the real one. In fact I really like the idea of replicas of Mona Lisa because you can have one in you room see it everyday whenever you want instead of going all the way to Museum du Louvre museum in France. These are my main ideas of what I think made it the worlds most famous painting from the renaissance. Finding something that is really old and valuable or something you have lost gets a lot of attention just like Mona Lisa did when it was found again after somebody stole it. .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 , .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .postImageUrl , .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 , .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:hover , .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:visited , .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:active { border:0!important; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:active , .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7 .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7f6f090ed4010c5d5b128a07e366d6f7:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Futility in World War One Poetry EssayLeonardo Da Vinci was one of the best artists during that time so why wouldnt you want to see how people his paintings and inventions so they can see what kind of tools they used in those times. A copy of something that is valuable makes it a lot famous and plus the copies are cheaper but it makes you feel like you have it. I personally think Mona Lisa is a great painting and has a lot of mystery to it because nobody knows why she is smiling and who she is.

Who Were the Real Savages free essay sample

Mary Rowland and Benjamin Franklins Remarks Concerning the Savages of North-America, I explore two very different perspectives of Native Americans. Mary Railroadings account of her captivity by the Native Americans drew many references to the Bible. It is this unwavering Christian faith that maintained her hope during her confinement. The irony lies in the fact that despite her Christian faith that preaches kindness and goodness, Rowland portrays a predominately negative outlook towards the Native Americans. Although the Natives never harmed her during her captivity, Rowland calls them black creatures. The use of the color lack alludes to demonic references, which is a recurring theme when referring to the Natives. When they dance and sing she not only chooses to see the evil in the Natives but also her surroundings as she said they made the place a lively resemblance of hell. This shows her condemnatory character and Ideology as she judges those that are different from her. We will write a custom essay sample on Who Were the Real Savages? or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Her Puritan way of life enforces a strict belief system that has lead to her ignorance of the Natives. These sub-human descriptions continue when she describes the natives as ravenous beasts and merciless enemies. However, she contradicts herself In the following passage: l have been in the midst of those roaring lions, and savage bears, that feared neither God, nor the devil, by night and day, alone and in company, sleeping all sorts together, and yet not one of them ever offered me the least abuse of unchristian to me, In word or action. Whilst comparing the Natives to vicious, wild animals she mentions that none of them ever hurt her emotionally or physically.Yet, she refuses to acknowledge this any further and even goes as far as to say, instead of turning His hand against them, he Lord feeds and nourish them up to be a scourge to the whole land. We observe here that Rowland has been so blinded by her faith that she fails to understand the other side of the story in which the Natives are defending their land. This is akin to her selfishly viewing the situation through tunnel vision where she desperately tries to maintain unwavering faith yet does not gain knowledge through viewing the situation as a whole. When Rowland returns home, she does not shown any signs of enlightenment 1 OFF so much hemmed in with the merciless and cruel Heathen, but now as much with dutiful, tenderhearted, and compassionate Christians. In the poor and distressed and beggarly condition I was received in. Her ideology does not change and s he leaves the ordeal with as much ignorance as she began with. Her reference to her friends and family as Christians as opposed to a more personal description reinforces the fact that her Puritan mindset has not changed. The Natives, did demonstrate impolite behavior by laughing when Rowland and her child fell off the horse. However, in Benjamin Franklins Remarks Concerning the Savages of North America e states: Perhaps, if we could examine the manners of different nations with Impartiality, we should find no People so rude, as to be without any Rules of Politeness; nor any so polite, as not to have some remains of Rudeness. Benjamin Franklin believed in self-sufficiency as opposed to living his life to fulfill a Christian destiny. In his remarks he aims to humanism the Natives and eliminate all prejudices and stereotypes of these people to those that see them as the enemy. As opposed to Rowland who referred to the Natives as savages and heathens, Franklin tried o bridge the gap between two very different cultures by stating that they were all o f one blood. He states Savages we call them, because their manners differ from ours, which we think the perfection of civility; they think the same of theirs. Franklin questions the derogatory view of the Natives and presses that although our culture is the epitome of perfection to us, the Natives rightly believe their culture is Just as superior. While Mary Rowland alluded to demonic references in regards to the Indians, Franklin conversely emphasized the Natives social politeness by drawing imprisons between a conversation between Indians and a conversation in the British House of Commons. He states, interrupting another, even in common conversation, is reckoned highly indecent. According to Franklin, in English society we listen impatiently to the extent that we will cut off someone that is talking mid- sentence. In the house of Commons, the speaker will grow hoarse in calling to order due to the commotion of people. Franklin claims that Native hospitality supersedes that of the English, especially in regards to strangers. The Natives will hollow to let heir presence be known before they are invited in to the village, as they do not be lieve that they should enter territory unannounced. On the contrary, the English have no problems entering a territory uninvited. Franklin said Our people (English) are apt to crowd round them, gaze upon them This they esteem great rudeness. By this he means that when there is a stranger, the English rudely stare at them while the Natives think this is disrespectful and choose to hide in the bushes to watch a new stranger in town. They also have what is called a Stranger House in which the transgress were clothed, fed, and were even supplied with luxuries such as tobacco and pipes. An example of this is in the following passage: If a white man, in traveling thro our Country, enters one of our Cabins, we all treat him as I treat you; we dry him if he is wet, we warm him if he is cold, and give him Meat Drink that he may allay his Thirst and Hunger, we spread soft Furs for him to rest sleep on: We demand nothing in return. But if I go into a White mans House at Albany, and ask for Victuals and Drink, they say, Where is your Money? ND if I have disrespectful than anything Rowland had ever experienced.According to Rowland herself, the Indians did not physically or emotionally harm her and yet the English in Franklins remarks call the Indians derogatory names. After reading both Rowland and Franklins account of the Native Americans we gain two extremely different perspectives. We are forced to question, who were the real savages? While Rowland depicted such a brutal and demonic idea of the Natives she gained the least amount of knowledge from the experience and h er only form of enlightenment lay in the fact that she was able to sustain her faith.

Ionization Energy Definition and Trend

Ionization Energy Definition and Trend Ionization energy is the energy required to remove an electron from a gaseous atom or ion. The first or initial ionization energy or Ei of an atom or molecule is the energy required to remove one mole of electrons from one mole of isolated gaseous atoms or ions. You may think of ionization energy as a measure of the difficulty of removing electron or the strength by which an electron is bound. The higher the ionization energy, the more difficult it is to remove an electron. Therefore, ionization energy is in indicator of reactivity. Ionization energy is important because it can be used to help predict the strength of chemical bonds. Also Known As: ionization potential, IE, IP, ΔH ° Units: Ionization energy is reported in units of kilojoule per mole (kJ/mol) or electron volts (eV). Ionization Energy Trend in the Periodic Table Ionization, together with atomic and ionic radius, electronegativity, electron affinity, and metallicity, follows a trend on the periodic table of elements. Ionization energy generally increases moving from left to right across an element period (row). This is because the atomic radius generally decreases moving across a period, so there is a greater effective attraction between the negatively charged electrons and positively-charged nucleus. Ionization is at its minimum value for the alkali metal on the left side of the table and a maximum for the noble gas on the far right side of a period. The noble gas has a filled valence shell, so it resists electron removal.Ionization decreases moving top to bottom down an element group (column). This is because the principal quantum number of the outermost electron increases moving down a group. There are more protons in atoms moving down a group (greater positive charge), yet the effect is to pull in the electron shells, making them smaller and screening outer electrons from the attractive force of the nucleus. More electron shells are added moving down a group, so the outermost electron becomes increasingly distance from the nucleus. First, Second, and Subsequent Ionization Energies The energy required to remove the outermost valence electron from a neutral atom is the first ionization energy. The second ionization energy is that required to remove the next electron, and so on. The second ionization energy is always higher than the first ionization energy. Take, for example, an alkali metal atom. Removing the first electron is relatively easy because its loss gives the atom a stable electron shell. Removing the second electron involves a new electron shell that is closer and more tightly bound to the atomic nucleus. The first ionization energy of hydrogen may be represented by the following equation: H(g) → H(g) e- ΔH °Ã‚   -1312.0 kJ/mol Exceptions to the Ionization Energy Trend If you look at a chart of first ionization energies, two exceptions to the trend are readily apparent. The first ionization energy of boron is less than that of beryllium and the first ionization energy of oxygen is less than that of nitrogen. The reason for the discrepancy is due to the electron configuration of these elements and Hunds rule. For beryllium, the first ionization potential electron comes from the 2s orbital, although ionization of boron involves a 2p electron. For both nitrogen and oxygen, the electron comes from the 2p orbital, but the spin is the same for all 2p nitrogen electrons, while there is a set of paired electrons in one of the 2p oxygen orbitals. Key Points Ionization energy is the minimum energy required to remove an electron from an atom or ion in the gas phase. The most common units of ionization energy are kilojoules per mole (kJ/M) or electron volts (eV).Ionization energy exhibits periodicity on the periodic table. The general trend is for ionization energy to increase moving from left to right across an element period. Moving left to right across a period, atomic radius decreases, so electrons are more attracted to the (closer) nucleus. The general trend is for ionization energy to decrease moving from top to bottom down a periodic table group. Moving down a group, a valence shell is added. The outermost electrons are further from the positive-charged nucleus, so they are easier to remove. References F. Organ Trade Issue Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Organ Trade Issue - Research Paper Example Because of the unexpected accidents and diseases or other life tragedies, many people lose some of their organs and often fell in troubles. For example, eyes are important organs in our body. Even when either one of the eyes loses its ability to see, it is difficult for us to see things properly. The case of ears is also not different. The kidney is another organ which is necessary for filtering out impurities from our body. All the humans have two kidneys, but only one is necessary to perform all the purification acts of our body. It is possible for a person with a defective kidney to transplant one from another person in order to lead a successful life. In other words, some of the defective human organs can be replaced with a new one if somebody agrees to donate one. Organ trade is a common thing in the current world nowadays. Many people argue in favor of and against organ trade citing different social, economic and ethical reasons. This paper argues in favor of organ trade after analyzing the pros and cons of the issue. In other words, buying and selling in human organs should be legalized under certain conditions.   Chris Chew (2007) has mentioned that the most controversial topics of ethical debates about organ trades are about the procurement and distribution of human organs for transplant and are centered on the questions of how do we get the organs and how do we decide who will receive organ transplants? (Chew). It is a fact that the creator has created only the necessary organs for the humans. For example, even if a human can survive with the help of one kidney alone, God has created another one as a substitute in case of a failure to either of the kidneys. Under such circumstances, if a person donates or sells one kidney for saving the life of another one, he is playing with his life.

A Dialog Axiata Plc Management Essay

A Dialog Axiata Plc Management Essay Dialog Axiata PLC, Sri Lankas largest communications service provider is a subsidiary of Axiata Group Berhad. Dialog being the 4th entrant to Sri Lankas cellular market launched its services in 1995. They were the first digital network in South Asia to launch HSPA + which is the latest upgrade in mobile broadband. In addition to communication service, the company also offers other services such as mobile, internet, international gateway, data and backbone, fixed wireless and media related services and has 200 value added services. The company is currently serving over 7.5 million local subscribers and is the 50% market leader in this industry. They have the widest coverage reaching 95% of the population and are the only operator to cover all the districts. They have 500 salesmen on the ground along with a strong service team of 1000 staff over 125 service centre and 50,000 retailer networks. They are also the highest FD Investor in Sri Lanka. 1.2- Why is Dialog selected Dialog is one of the most reputed companies in Sri Lanka with a highly diversified group of employees where they would definitely have cross cultural issues. In addition, they have been undergoing ongoing strategic as well as transformation changes which as a result would rise to conflicts at the different levels of the hierarchy. Therefore being a large and reputed company, Dialog stands as a challenging company in the competitive market. 2- Culture at Dialog Every organization has its own culture which refers to the beliefs, ideologies, principles and also the values that the individuals of the organization share. The culture plays a vital role in the success of the organization. When it comes to Dialog, the company has adopted a very open and transparent culture where they have embodied honesty and open communication. Transparency is maintained at all levels where superiors are easily available to the subordinates. The corporate culture of the company fits to Adaptability as well as achievement oriented which emphasize winning and achieving specific ambitious goals and the company values competitiveness and personal imitativeness. Dialog is a company that is also working for the benefits of the staff. The company has a dress code policy to make the office attire equal within the staff. Staff birth days are also celebrated at the company level where the relevant departments forward the staff birthday list to HR Department on the 1st week of the month where the staff will get a gift along with an e-card. And they have a policy like staff that comes up with innovative ideas a recognized on a quarterly basis where they are provided with a reward named BRAVO in a special meeting. Obviously the above actions on the company side will lead to high motivation and increase productivity level of the staff. 2.1- Hofstedes Model Diagram 1: Hofstedes cultural 4 dimension Model Power Distance Although Sri Lanka scores high on this dimension, Dialog is more towards the low power distance. They have a decentralized hierarchy where employees and subordinates do not show inequality much. The superiors or the Management team are willing and they trust the subordinates with important jobs. Individualism vs Collectivism Dialog falls towards the collectivism, because the people in the company have stronger bonds to their groups. Masculinity vs Feminity In Dialog its more like a combination of both as this would help them for a balanced approach. They value achievement and competitiveness as well as money and power. However, they also value people and maintain good relationship with them. Uncertainty Avoidance / structured situations At Dialog, the degree of uncertainty avoidance is low. The company always welcomes for new things and changes, and embrace unpredictable situations. The company is very flexible and open to new approaches or ideas. 3- Changes in Dialog During the past, Dialog Company has undergone several Strategic as well as Operational Changes. However, in this assignment only the following recent changes are being explained; Outsourced Call Centre to Firstsource Solutions (2011) During 2011, Dialog entered into a partnership with the BPO service provider Firstsource Solutions where Firstsouce acquired 76% shares of the Dialog Company. The new company was named as Firstsource Dialog Solutions. Acquired Suntel Ltd (2012) Dialog acquired Suntel Ltd, Sri Lankas second largest wireless fixed line operator during 2012. The main reason behind this change was to eliminate one of their main competitors from the market. As a result of the change, Suntels former customer base plus all the employees were transferred to Dialog. Outsourced SAP to Attune Lanka (2012) Business set-up Over the Top Service (2012) During 2012, Dialog opened its largest hi-tech Customer Service Centre in Colombo, where they brought in 150 customer service professions trained in multiple technologies. 3.1- Resistance to Change overcoming resistance Despite the potential positive outcomes, change is often resisted at both the individual and the organizational level (Mullins, 1999). When Dialog brought the above mentioned changes as mentioned in Clause 3 above, the company faced resistances from the employees. However they overcame the main problems and issues as mentioned below; Resistance to Change Overcoming Resistance Suntel employees adapting to Dialog culture Suntel Ltd and Dialog were having two different types of corporate culture. So when Suntel Ltd was brought under Dialog, employees who were working for Suntel had a very difficult time adjusting to Dialogs new culture. As such they were given briefings, training sessions, and were well educated. Employee ranking / salary structure issues When Suntels former employees were brought to Dialog, there were some problems relating to the rankings or position levels and even with the salary structure. Therefore Dialog mapped every staff to the level and was given a probation period of 3 months with given tasks and targets. So if the relevant employee was able to perform to the expected level they were given the same position they had in Suntel. Staff transfer (Dialog Brand loyalty) When Dialogs card centre staffs were transferred to SAP, some issues were raised because people who have been working for Dialog for a long time felt bad and also they didnt actually want to leave Dialog since they felt some kind of proudness working in Dialog. However, Dialog Management convinced the staff that they would not lose anything and will get all the benefits and additional opportunities for their career development. Staff de-motivation effective communication (peers to HR) Security in the past Obviously moving to a new company would feel confused and unsecured about the new environment. In the case of Suntel Staff, they felt that they might not be able to perform well or might even lose the job. Therefore Dialog offered a job guarantee letter confirming that their jobs are not at risk. But any how they were well informed that if anyone who cannot perform to the expected level would be withdrawn from the job. 3.2- John Kotters Change Process Diagram 1: John Kotters 8 steps theory model When we look at the John Kotters change model, Dialog also initially created a sense of urgency when they underwent changes. They convinced the employees the importance of acting immediately due to high competitiveness. Also they formed a powerful group to lead the change effort and encourage the group and created a vision where they communicated with the entire employees. In order to reach the vision, they tried to remove the obstacles that might undermine the vision and encourage risk taking ideas. 3.3- Human Resources Role Human Resource is the backbone of any company and it is their duty to minimize the resistance and make the change a successful one. In Dialogue HR was very certain in properly communicating the employees about the change and ensured that there would be no harm done to any staff and as per the labour law, all the right of the employees were delivered. Even when they took over Suntel, the former staffs service period was counted on a continuing basis. For example if an employee had served Suntel for a period of 6 years, then they had counted from the 7th year when the staff joined Dialog 3.4- Force Field Analysis Force field analysis is a technique by Kurt Lewin that can be applied in a team building program. When we look at the Dialog side, the listed driving forces help the company to achieve their targets or goals. On the other hand restricting forces make it difficult to reach their targets. Some of the major critical factors in the restraining forces that the company is not able control are the high energy cost. For example, the Sri Lankan market is yet to grow but cost is very high 4- Conflicts in Dialog Problems will obviously arise in an environment where diversified people are working and especially if two companies with two different cultures are merged. In Dialog case, most of the conflict arises at the individual levels mainly due to difference in their personal views since some might think the change as a positive thing while others might take it as a threat or risk for them. Also several issues rose because Suntel staff had the feeling that they might be treated unequally or they might not get all the rights what Dialog company staffs already had. 4.1- Sources of conflicts During the change process, several conflicts raised in Dialgue which was mainly due to the following reasons; Nature of work activities When we take company buys but the Company the sales staff do all the documentation promising to give the service within two days. But if they do not hear from the company and technical staff Information not passed properly Communication barriers as difficulties in communicating to all levels of the staff can cause misunderstanding and as a result may create problems especially at the very lower level staff. For example Messenger level staff would not be able to access to intra-net plus they might not be able to understand internal memos or notices written in foreign language). Differences in perception Also different peoples perception would be different. Some may feel that merging the two companies would be obviously an opportunity for their career improvement while other might take it as a huge threat. Uncertainty of Job Security conflicts occurred.. 4.1- Effects of conflicts Conflict situations sometimes can be taken as a positive thing depending on the situation. However, some of the main negative effects of conflicts are; Stress De-motivation Absenteeism (5%) Staff turnover (5%) 4.1- Resolving conflicts When it comes to conflict within the company, Dialog takes all the relevant actions at the right time to avoid unnecessary fights and disagreements. This is because they believe that it would hugely affect the productivity level of the employees. The company has a written code of conduct where every employee follows and is aware about the companies policies and procedures. When handling conflicts, the matter is first discussed at the supervisor or the relevant department level and thereafter then line Manager. If the matter is still not solved then the issue is raised to the HR Dept and further to Senior Management level. In worst cases, Arbitrators are invited to solve the problem if required. When it comes to the procedures, first the staff is negotiated verbally and if that does not help, written explanation as well as enquiries is done. However if all these actions do not work then written warnings are also given. 5- Change Management through organization learning 51- Single Loop Double Loop Learning model As per the model, Dialog uses the two ways to learn from their experience; Single Loop Learning The company takes corrective action to avoid or resolve a mistake but does not go deep into the matter. Double Loop Learning This is where the company looks into the root of the problem to find the underlying cause of the problem. 6- Conclusion Based on the above information and extensive research done, it may be concluded that the company has a very open and transparent culture. In addition, it is successful in managing culture, change and conflict. This is because Dialog Company has a set procedure for everything as per their Code of Conduct. Further when a new staff joins or is recruited, the staff will be provided with a clearly written job description so that everybody would know what is their role and what is expected from them. 7- Recommendations Although the company is successful in managing change and conflicts, the following recommendations would enable the company more Build an innovative platform to encourage creativity among staff Although staff is given the opportunity to come up with innovative ideas, at the moment the company does not have a special department When outsourcing give more choice to employees to choose their own way When outsourcing we feel that the staff should be given a chance to choose what is best for them. For example in case when card centre of Dialog was outsourced, they were not given any chance for their own views whether they want a transfer to another department within Dialog or want to join the new company. If they should have given the chance or at least got some feedback, then they might not have felt negative. Introduce job enrichment to motivate the staffs At the moment there is no job rotation or job enrichment programes within the company. However, if job enrichment programme is introduced, the staff would feel more motivated and responsible for their work. It would enable them to try new tasks and stretch their skills beyond what they have been doing all the time. Go GREEN In order to reduce the companys high energy cost, it can go to solar panels

Pros and Cons of Abortion Essay -- Religion Christianity Abortion Ethi

Pros and Cons of Abortion Should a list of pros and cons of abortion really be necessary for Christians...or human beings for that matter? I mean, have we really reached a point where we cannot tell that abortion is murderous no matter how you color it or try to paint it as compassionate? Apparently so. Thirty plus years after the infamous Supreme Court decision in Roe versus Wade and thirty one years after my own timely birth, I sit in awe at the ignorance of a great portion of society...their lack of understanding, their selfishness, and their brazen support of such a horrendous practice as abortion. I guess I should not be surprised that the unregenerate world can support abortion, but what shocks me most is that professing Christians need to consider some sort of pros and cons of abortion list so that they can "make an informed decision". It is a crying shame that we have reached a day when the Bible is not sufficient enough of a guideline for Christians that they feel they must hear the "pros and cons of abortion". Well, since this seems to be the case, let’s look at some pros and cons of abortion. Lets evaluate them in light of the scriptures and in light of our conclusions based on the whole of scripture and the impecable character of our God and His expectations for us. I recently viewed a site with one of these lists with the "pros and cons of abortion". I would like to review their statements with my evaluation of them below: Pros of Abortion "*Laws against abortion kill women. Even though abortion may be illegal doesn't mean that women won't go through with the abortion. Look at the case of Becky Bell for example. She was an innocent girl that did not want her child and died because of an illegal abortion." ***My Assessment: Yes, people will continue to sin, but we should never sit band condone theirs inn by either verbal support or merely apathy. We certainly should not use the dumb excuse of: "Well, they are just going to do it anyway and at least if abortion is legal, they won't be doing them in dirty back alleys." It is always tragic when a human being loses their life, but if abortion is once again outlawed (as it should be), these people would always be losing their lives in violation of a good, common sense, and compassionate law. If they die breaking the law, then they will die the death of a criminal. But, please keep... ...ortion you will always wonder what if, and feel guilty for the rest of your life about the child you could have had." Biblical pros and cons of abortion: Isa 44:24 Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I [am] the LORD that maketh all [things]; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself; Biblical pros and cons of abortion: Isa 46:3 Hearken unto me, O house of Jacob, and all the remnant of the house of Israel, which are borne [by me] from the belly, which are carried from the womb: Biblical pros and cons of abortion: Isa 66:9 Shall I bring to the birth, and not cause to bring forth? saith the LORD: shall I cause to bring forth, and shut [the womb]? saith thy God. Now I shall leave you with some very key scriptures as you consider the pros and cons of abortion... Jer 1:5 Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, [and] I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Isa 49:15 Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea, they may forget, yet will I not forget thee.

Strictly speaking, the attitude of the individual plays the most important role to maintain the harmony and prosperity of a plural society in Malaysia today. In addition, the school also has acted as a multiracial society living in our country in order to live in peace and harmony. The school must provide activities that involve community NATURE various social and ethnic groups. If the traditional practices of a community with the involvement of various races not practiced, of course, will not sustain social harmony. In short, the traditional practices of community involvement plural society to maintain peace and prosperity of the community living in multi-ethnic communities, as explained under the proverb to the same groove descendants, the same mountain to climb. In addition, the mass media also play an important role in maintaining peace and harmony among the various races in the country. This is so because, the mass media is a mechanism or means of mass media that delivers information and news to the public quickly and in a short time. Attitudes are easily influenced by mass media such as radio or television is a common scenario that we see today. With the publication of advertisements or stories on the theme of unity and harmony, the spirit of love for peace will continue to be embe dded in the chest of all people in Malaysia. For example, stories, and advertisements as the movie â€Å"Papadom† and TM advertisement featuring the friendship between races like the Malays, Chinese and Indians. In the event, the mass media do not play their role as the fastest means of mass media, surely harmony and prosperity of the community is difficult to maintain in the community in our country. It is clear that the mass media is the link between the community mechanism in maintaining a harmonious multi-racial society in Malaysia. Government also plays an important role in maintaining a harmonious ulti-racial society in our country. This is so because our country practicing democracy and ruled by a government that is fair and equitable. Notion of â€Å"1 Malaysia† is constantly changing depending on an important event has led to a drastic transformation in maintaining national harmony. Every citizen should be willing to fight and sacrifice their lives to defend th e sovereignty of a price, security and way of life regardless of race. For example during the 54th Independence Day in 2011, the founder of the slogan â€Å"1 Malaysia†, the sixth Prime Minister of Malaysia Datuk Seri Mohd Najib B.Abdul Razak has made the theme â€Å"1 Malaysia† on the theme of ‘transformation successful, prosperous people. † Should the government play a role properly, honest and trustworthy is certainly well-being in a multi-ethnic society can be maintained. Tegaslah that the government is a party that plays an important role in maintaining a harmonious multi-racial society. conclusion, all parties should work together to maintain peace and harmony among human societies, races in our country. In this context, civil society must work together and compromise as well as the practice of traditional practices and collaboration between the school, the mass media and the government to maintain the harmony of the society in Malaysia. Therefore, in conjunction with the 54th Merdeka Day and the month of the formation of Malaysia, let us strive to be more patriotic, pledge to give full contribution to the community mediators, more united and willing to sacrifice for the country as indeed ‘ Round the bamboo water , round man for reconciliation ‘.

Free Essays on Ciceros On Duties

Summary of Cicero’s, On Duties This excerpt from the book, On the Good Life, is a letter from Cicero to his son. I couldn’t even imagine getting something like this from my father. It is full of great advice on how to live your life in such a way that you are regarded as a highly favorable person with impeccable morals. I agree with most of what Cicero has to say in his excerpt, On Duties. In this review I will summarize Cicero’s’ main arguments and his ideas for a better person and nation. I believe that Cicero wrote this book for intelligent individuals who wanted to attain power in life through morally positive avenues; it was written almost as an academic piece. It was also written as a gage with which a person who was reading it could weigh himself. Cicero begins the volume by relating to us why he has chosen Philosophy as his current field of study, his only field of study. He had once been a political leader but since the government â€Å"lay under domination of a single individual† (120) he was angry and sorrowful that he had lost some of his good friends to the uprising. That he was no longer able to practice politics deeply saddened Cicero. So to forget his sorrows he took up philosophy. Cicero believed that the best method for learning was philosophy because it literally meant love of wisdom. Even though Cicero thought himself a philosopher he was quick to disagree with those philosophers who he saw as tricky and misleading to the public. Cicero believed that the only way to â€Å"attain the objects of their desires† was â€Å"by moral goodness, both in thought and in action† (125). This leads us to Cicero’s classification of expediency and how it affects us as humans. Cicero classified the â€Å"things that go towards the maintenance of human life† (125) as either animate or inanimate. The inanimate objects consist of gold and silver and things from the earth. He then further classifies the animate into rationa... The presupposition of the democratic sort of regime is freedom Essay

The presupposition of the democratic sort of regime is freedom (1317a40) - Essay Example Therefore, what is wrong with the principle that allows one to live in the custom that they desire? Indeed, this idea seems to constitute intuitively of the true definition of freedom and it does in a sense. This is because what everyone wants, on top of all else, is to be happy. Thus, every want is aimed indirectly or directly at attaining the ultimate good. What we can ascertain from this is that, in the deepest sense, what individual wants is to live a life of virtue because a virtuous life is a happy one. Aristotle starts out in Politics by discussing the origins of the city of Polisor. He seems to be clearly fascinated by this form of life that is not so old, and the possibilities that the city offers for human excellence (Aristotle et al 41). Aristotle sees it as being emergent from various natural communities such as villages and families, as well as from the relationships that are present between master and slave, parents and children, and between husband and wife. The manner in which these relationships are ordered and the communities that they are found in calls for an appropriate set of rules. Aristotle makes an argument against people who claim that every rule is the same, insisting on fundamental differences between political rules, mastery of slaves, and household management. This can be taken to indicate the basic freedom sense in Aristotle’s Politics. ... This life lets them engage with other people who are not servants or members of their family, although they are also free. Citizens can participate in the molding of their individual futures, as well as the wellbeing and futures of their community in this life. When the city and the city’s constitution fail, then freedom is lost. Despotic rule can be considered as importation of slave domestic management mode to cities that are inhabited by nominally free people. Tyranny is explained as a form of politics that has serious flaws because of its perversions to the tyrant’s sole interests (Aristotle et al 97). Aristotle considers the two manifestations freedom as democratic freedom and as it happens in the best city possible. Aristotle devotes a lot of time in his considerations of the different types of democracy. He views democracy for its weaknesses and strengths. However, he contends that democracy is driven by freedom (Aristotle et al 101). The fact that persons learn to be governed, and how to govern, is a strong feature of democracy. Using a constitution that has its prime grounded in freedom ensures that elections are done on a majority vote basis since everyone is equal. Aristotle is quick to acknowledge that the majority will often achieve judgment that is better than would be if a few people on their own made it. A more radical form of democracy, which is not sans precedence, is whereby offices are given through lots. However, this position on democracy is not uncontested. Aristotle recognizes three human life conditions that lead to justice claims, which are virtue, wealth, and freedom. It is here that we see the differences that exist between aristocrats,

Mock Teacher Interview on Assessment Research Paper

Mock Teacher Interview on Assessment - Research Paper Example Those who volunteer and raise hands are mostly the fast learners and the rest, are either slow learners or mob of non-interested students. How would you to help slow learners understand without boring the fast learners? It often gets very challenging to achieve this. However, I address this issue by reserving the last ten minutes of my class to address the confusions and queries of the slow learners. Besides, I also welcome the students to approach me in the free time and discuss their issues. What ways would you use to help students who repeatedly fail to do their homework despite punishments?   The school management needs to be convinced into taking certain measures to address this issue because the only way I think students can be made to do their homework is to make them do it in the classroom. The school administration should provide assistants to supervise the children while they do their homework in class after the break-off time. How would you handle a class which has given up hope of ever passing your subject?   One way is to request the administration to remove me from the faculty list for that particular class because if not me, some other teacher may be able to take them to the required level. I have hardly another option if this does not work.

How To Win Friends and Influence people - Research Paper Example He recognizes the power of the human mind that determines the sense of happiness. However, he also warns against criticism, self-centeredness and shallowness and qualifies them as destructive to any relationship. Carnegie foregrounds the negative impact of criticism in human relations because it severely affects the person’s self-esteem and puts him/her in self-defense with the feeling of being attacked. He focuses on how criticism ruins human relationships and recommends leaving it altogether if we want to maintain genuine interpersonal connections: The author informs: â€Å"Criticism is futile because it puts a person on the defensive and usually makes him strive to justify himself. Criticism is dangerous, because it wounds a persons precious pride, hurts his sense of importance, and arouses resentment†(Carnegie 23). This violation of the person’s integrity affects their pride and creates a feeling of rejection that deteriorates the relationships between the people. Instead of criticism, Carnegie advocates a diplomat attitude deeply rooted on being positive and rejecting any form of negativity. He gives the example of this famous personality in American history:  "Benjamin Franklin, tactless in his youth, became so diplomatic, so adroit at handling people, that he was made American Ambassador to France. The secret of his success? ‘will speak ill of no man,’ he said, ‘ . . and speak all the good I know of everybody’† (Carnegie 29). This change of attitude gave Franklin the opportunity to become one of the greatest men in American history. Therefore, Carnegie associates success to a positive attitude that consists of eliminating anything negative while focusing on the good aspects of people and things. Besides, appreciation represents one of the most important concepts Carnegie recommends to use with the people around us. Getting recognition from family members, friends, employees, co-workers or any others makes people happy, elevate

Public Infrastructure Key Essay Example for Free

Public Infrastructure Key Essay The PKI is a set of hardware, software, procedures and people for the creation, distribution, storing and management of digital certificates. It also maintains the networking environment of an organization by providing management service which could enable digital signature capabilities. It also enabled the users of unsecure public network for exchanging and private cryptographic key pair in order to obtain and share a trusted authority between the management of an organization. For improving an organization, PKI includes use of digital signatures, certificate validation, and permission management service in order to implement a wide variety of enterprise solution within an organization. The implementation of certification authority is primary way of PKI in which it could benefit an organization and Information security department by providing public key and authority. In this way, both organization and Information security department is benefited from the implementation of user keys. The web of trust is the second way in which PKI provides an alternative approach of public key information for enabling the issue digital certificates for user, applications and devices of an organization and Information security department. Establishment of leverage certification authentication is the third way which benefits an organization and Information security department by maintaining an auditable database of users in order to secure privacy histories of Information security department. The development of Certification Authority is the way in which PKI could assist in the process of signing the company’s software by providing root of trust and services for the authentication of computers, individuals and other entities in a network. This is because, it saves certificate requests and issues certificates for signing the company’s software by means of saving the encryption keys in the certificate database for recovering the data loss of  computer’s softwar e. Consumer could believe that the software is to be authentic and because Certification Authority is valuable in authenticating software effectively. Consumer can get authentic software by the establishment of keys which are valid and trustworthy and in order to provide the assurance of software, it represents the people, system and process for the creation of digital certificates of software. For benefiting consumers, Certification Authority is having three kinds of information which are user’s name in the format of distinguished name, verification of user’s digital signature for software and encryption and verification of digital signatures of software. The public CA is considered as an accountable CA for any failure of PKI and on the other hand, in-house CA is integrated in Active Directory. The public CA would trust a digital certificate and in-house CA is performed upon its own tasks for simplifying the management of CA structure. The certificate management of public CA is lower than in-house CA. These are the positive characteristics of both public and in-house CA. The negative characteristics of public and in-house CA are that infrastructure of public CA is limited and it has less flexibility, in-public CA is more complicated and business partners would not trust in-house CA. When comparing both public and in-house CA, the Public Certification will be better in implementing within an organization and because Public CA provides effective self-registration, digital identities, enrollment services and PIN authentication than in-house CA. Public CA is a highly functional and trustworthy when comparing with in-house CA. Hence, PKI contributes the management of life cycle of digital certificates, profiles of administration for an organization and Information security department. References Vacca, Jhn R. (2004). Deviance & Control in a Feature Film `Boyz n the Hood`

Deviance is a variation from the norm. Everything from picking boogers in public to murdering somebody is considering an act of deviance. There are many theories of deviation and the film Boyz in the Hood and it provides a good base for understanding and providing real life examples concerning deviant behavior. The major issues apparent in the film are concerning the control and labeling theory which gives insight into the characters lives. Boyz N the Hood provides many examples of the deviance and control theories.Deviance in statistics is the variations in what the outcomes are supposed to be. In sociology a deviant is a person who isn’t what he should normally be. Any variation from social, cultural or religious norms can be deviation. â€Å"In a recent book about deviance, Douglas (1984) has identified rape, homosexuality and terrorism as major categories of deviance today, and his choice of these highlights a recurrent concern among sociologists to link an analysis of de viance with that of particular forms of sexual and violent behavior.Indeed, a quick glance through the contents of any book dealing with deviance is likely to reveal an interest in making sense of forms of sexual behavior as diverse as prostitution, child abuse, homosexuality, transexualism and extra-marital sexual activity. Similarly with respect to violence, interest has been shown in gang violence, rape, juvenile delinquency, football hooliganism and acts of terrorism. To this list of concerns, however, should be added studies looking at less spectacular forms of deviances such as alcohol dependence, childlessness, stuttering, and solvent use† (Aggleton 1-2)Many of these deviations are portrayed in the movie. The most significant ones relate to crime, murder, sex, and alcohol and drug abuse. A lot less spectacular forms of deviation are also apparent in the movie. One example of this is when Ricky urinates in one of the alleys right before his death. By studying this film c losely a lot of deviant behaviors can be pointed at easily. â€Å"John Singleton’s 1991 film Boyz N the Hood in the context on American sub cultural deviance theories†¦ presents aspects of many of the major theories of deviance (labeling, strain, social control, and differential association).(Leblanc, 1998, p. 64) The major characters Tre, tre’s father, Ricky and Doughboy represent different forms of deviance and control. Tre’s father is a controller because he continuously tells everyone around him to start thinking. Tre is different than the other people in the neighborhood because his father has raised him differently. The dad tries to instill good values in his son so he can succeed and not conform to the deviant norms of his surroundings. Tre’s dad is also active in social control. In one scene after the SAT exam Tre’s dad takes Tre and Ricky out to see something. He brings them to a billboard in the neighborhood and asks the two boys wha t they understand from it. While he explains to them what gentrification a small crowd starts to surround his sermon like speech. He says, â€Å"They want us to kill ourselves†¦ the best way you can destroy a people you take their ability to reproduce themselves. † This reflects the opening lines of the movie and the death toll concerning African Americans. â€Å"One of out of every twenty-one Black males will be murdered in their lifetime†¦most will die at the hands of another Black male.† The dad wants the people in the neighborhood to stop killing each other because â€Å"you’re doing exactly what they want you to do, you have to think†¦ about your future. † This reflects the control theory and how the dad manages to keep a strong relationship with his son. The control theory states that the closer people are to each other and the stronger their bonds they will be less likely to deviate. Continuously throughout the movie the dad talks to his son about everything and tries to teach him along the way. Another example in the movie is when the dad gives him advice about not having children at a young age.He says that any guy can a have a child but raising one makes him a man. Also after the SAT exam the dad tells the boys how the exam is biased and math is the only section that is universally unbiased in the exam. The father son relationship is not there when it comes to Tre’s friends. Ricky and Doughboy are half brothers and there father is never around. Doughboy is the deviant in the family whereas Ricky tries to stay away from trouble. The control theory states that people who have stronger bonds are less like to deviate compared to people who have weaker bonds. The boys’ behavior and their future can be observed and analyzed by both the control theory and the labeling theory. When their lives are analyzed according to the labeling theory it is easy to see why the two brothers act in a specific way. â⠂¬Å"The labeling theory states that of people are called something or told who they are often enough shall begin to act in that manner. † (Leblanc, 1998, p. 64) For example, if a child is labeled a bully in school even if he has done the act one and continues to be called a bully it is quite likely that he will try to or conform to the label that has been given to him.On the other hand if a person is told that they can excel over and over again they will most like live up to those expectations. In the movie this contrast is observed between Ricky and Doughboy. Their mother continuously puts Doughboy down and praises Ricky. â€Å"You ain’t shit, you don’t do shit, and you ain’t never going to amount to shit,† is one of the remarks passed by the mother to Doughboy. When we observe the first half of the movie which depicts the boys childhood it is apparent that Doughboy was not always a deviant. When the boys in the hood, pun intended, take away Rickyà ¢â‚¬â„¢s football Doughboy is appalled. The child simply wants his brother to have his ball back. He stands up for his brother and he gets beaten up. Because of his personality type he gets into trouble. Eventually his mother starts putting him down because he is continuously getting into trouble. â€Å"The labeling theory suggests that this would explain why he was in jail most of his life, deals drugs, kills people, and is eventually murdered in the end of the movie. This theory also suggests that the encouragement of his mother led Ricky to become a football star and receive a scholarship to USC. † (Leblanc, 1998, p.64)In the end of the movie, Ricky dies when other guys from the neighborhood shoot him and Doughboy dies two weeks after avenging his brother’s death. The assumption can be made that Doughboy was murdered by the people connected to his brother’s murderers. When he is young he gets into trouble and starts going down a slippery slope because he defen ds his brother and when he gets old he dies trying to avenge his brother’s death. When the lives of Ricky and Doughboy are observed according to the control theory we can have an even better understanding of why Ricky is the polar opposite of his brother. The control theory talks about the affect of strong bonds between people. Ever since Ricky is little he has had a stronger bond with the people around him. Although both the boys’ fathers’ are never present Ricky has a football that his father gave to him. When they grow up Ricky has a stronger bond with his mom and his mom favors him more. Ricky also has a girlfriend who lives in his house and a son. Ricky has reasons to not deviate. Although his premarital sexual relationship and having a child before marriage is a type of deviation he does not conform to the deviations that his brother does.At the end of the movie when Ricky is dead and Doughboy is talking to Tre he says that he has no one, no brother and no mom. He says that his mom never loved him and it was all about Tre. Doughboy and his weak bonds with the people around him led him to deviate more often. Both the labeling theory and the control theory help us understand the lives of the brothers and how they behaved. Tre’s father is one of the controllers in the movie and his portrayal of a Black man who thinks is presented respectfully. He continuously teaches his son to think and stay away from deviant behavior. After Ricky’s death he explains to Tre that he should not go out to seek revenge because that is exactly what the system is designed to do. He tells his son that if he wants to shoot a man he should shoot his dad first and that it is too stupid to loose Tre over a stupid battle. His message to Tre and everyone else has always been to stop killing each other and pursue a life that is better. With his guidance Tre is one of the characters that is alive at the end of the movie and goes to college. Although Ricky gets accepted and has a scholarship he dies before he can even embark upon the opportunity. The other controller is Tre’s mother. Ever since he was young he has taught him to stick to his word and that there would be consequences if he wouldn’t. He ends up living with is father because he has gotten into a fight at school and his acts have been a breech of contract with his mom. When we compare Tre’s and Doughboy’s childhood they were both involved in confrontations and physical fights as young children. The only thing different was that Tre had a set of parents who were controllers and instilled strong bonds with each other. The police officer is also a controller in the movie except he presented cynically. He believes that everyone in the neighborhood is a deviant and should die. When he comes to Tre’s house after a break in he tells them that the burglar should have been shot and that he shouldn’t have gotten away. He is extremely cynical and does not believe in the betterment of the people in the neighborhood. When Tre is older he is pulled over by the same police officer although he hasn’t broken the law. The officer pulls him over out of spite and just to see if he has been drinking, possesses any drugs or weapons. There are many acts of neutralization present in the movie when the deviants try to justify their behavior. At the sermon in front of the billboard that Tre’s dad gives about people killing themselves over stupid things and conforming to the system a few guys listening in try to defend their actions. They say that if someone â€Å"messes with them† or causes any trouble they are not going to tolerate anything and take action. They say that they will not tolerate any sort of misconduct or even an attitude problem and resort to killing if they need to. This is later reflected in the movie when Ricky gets murdered over an argument. At a party he gets shoved in the arm so he starts yelli ng at the other guys. Those guys are scared away initially by Doughboys gun but then they come back to kill Ricky. This shows that whatever Tre’s dad says has a lot of truth to it and that when a deviant deviates he doesn’t see it as a deviation. He sees it as an act of neutralization. He is simply standing up for himself and defending him self. He is simply justifying his cause. The quality of a deviant is that he fights back each time. Every little thing such as the role of an eye or an argument is reason enough to kill someone. Sometimes people deviate intentionally because they want to prove people wrong.Sometimes people deviate because they are living up to their labels. Sometimes people deviate because they don’t know any better. Tre’s insistence on having sec with his Catholic girlfriend can be considered deviant behavior because he is going against what his parents have told him. His girlfriend gets angry with him but he does not resort to further deviations. Doughboy gets labeled a deviant from an early age but he never fights back to clear the misconception. He continuously involves himself in activities that live upto his reputation. This film seeks to normalize society. The message at the end of the movie is to stop and to create peace. The movie shows a real life depiction of what happens in the hood and how it hurts everyone living in it. It sheds light on how their behavior is affecting them negatively. They show all aspects of particular societal trends in order to create awareness among the people. The movie asks questions about traditional ways of controlling a form of deviance when it highlights the role of the police officer and the kids who try to fight deviance. The police officer just wants to kill everybody and is an extreme cynic and Ricky believes that the only way to stop another deviant is by acting the same way with him. The police officer hopes that the guy who broke in the house should have been dead and that everyone on the street is a gangster. All throughout the movie deviant behavior can be clearly spotted. The only way to normalize deviant behavior is to understand why it happens and how it happens. Young kids like Ricky all over the world end up committing crimes because of the weak bonds they have. They end up deviating from societal norms because they have been labeled a specific way. They already have a reputation and they feel that they cannot get away from it. They accept what society has labeled them and give into the norms of deviation. Kids who have stronger bonds with family and society on the other hand can easily breakaway from any childhood delinquencies they were a part of like Tre. People should understand that the labeling theory is not always negative and that it can be used to boost people’s morale and have positive outcomes. This happened for Ricky because of the continuous support from his mom but in the end he did not live to see any of it. This is why the control theory should be implanted along with the labeling theory in a positive way. When people realize the roots of the problem only then will they be able to fix it. The movie is a message to all the people of America to realize what happens in the certain neighborhoods and how to eradicate the problem. The message is to stop killing each other and to promote peace. References Aggleton, P. (1987). Deviance. Society now. London: Tavistock. Leblanc, Lauraine (1998, January).
